Cristy Meier Named NESCAC Co-Player of the Week
AMHERST, MA – Amherst College sophomore outside hitter Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, CA) has been named the NESCAC Volleyball Co-Player of the Week for leading the Lord Jeffs to a 2-1 record last week. Meier is the first member of the Amherst squad to earn the conference’s weekly honor this season.
Amherst kicked off its week with a 3-0 win over Westfield State College but had its seven-match winning streak come to a halt with a 3-1 setback to Connecticut College Friday evening. The Lord Jeffs rebounded with an impressive 3-2 come-from-behind win over Wesleyan, during which Amherst won the final three sets to overcome a 2-0 deficit.
Meier put in one of her best performances of the season during the win over Wesleyan, finishing the match with 27 kills, nine digs, four total blocks and a .442 hitting percentage. For the week, the sophomore standout averaged 4.75 kills and 1.25 digs per set while hitting at a .376 clip.
In 2008 Meier finished fifth in the NESCAC with 3.16 kills per set and seventh in hitting percentage with a .279 mark, averages that she is on pace to surpass this season. Heading into the final stretch of the regular season, Meier is averaging 3.71 kills per set (3rd in the NESCAC), adding 33 total blocks with an impressive .328 hitting percentage (2nd in the NESCAC).
Standing at 16-4 overall, Amherst is looking to win at least 20 matches for a fourth consecutive year. The Lord Jeffs’ 5-2 NESCAC record leaves them in a tie for third place with Middlebury and Williams with only three conference games remaining.
Sharing the Co-Player of the Week honor with Meier is Middlebury’s Jane Handel, who helped lead the Panthers to victories over Bowdoin College, Hamilton College and regional powerhouse Tufts University.
The Lord Jeffs will return to action Wednesday, Oct. 21 when they travel to take on Trinity College at 7 p.m. in a NESCAC matchup.
