Amherst Gets Back on Track with 3-0 Win Over St. Michael's

MIDDLEBURY, VT – Less than 24 hours after suffering its first loss of the season, the Amherst College volleyball team got back on track with a 3-0 win over Saint Michael’s College in Middlebury College’s Pepin Gym. The Lord Jeffs (4-1, 0-1 NESCAC) will return to action Tuesday, Sept. 21, when they travel to take on Johnson & Wales University at 7 p.m.

The Lord Jeffs got off to a slow start against the Purple Knights, edging out a 30-28 win in the first set. Amherst then cruised to a 25-11 second-set victory before closing out the match and the weekend with a 25-19 result in the third frame.

Amherst tri-captain Rachel Yorke ’11 (Los Angeles, CA) finished the day with two service aces and a team-high 21 digs. Cristy Meier ’12 (San Anselmo, CA) had 14 kills, with Abigail Hunter ’13 (Kentfield, CA) and Mary Reiser ’12 (New York, NY) adding 11 kills and six kills, respectively. Callie Neilson ’13 (Escondido, CA) handed out 33 assists.

Putting in identical performances were senior tri-captains Jackie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) and Laura Hyman (Glencoe, IL), who each had two kills and five total blocks. Devin Pence ’14 (Los Angeles, CA), Kristin Keeno ’13 (Honolulu, HI) and Erin Camp ’11 (Santa Monica, CA) continued to play solid defense, finishing with dig totals of 13, 10 and 8, respectively.

After taking on Johnson & Wales Tuesday, the Jeffs will prepare to host the 2010 Amherst Classic. The two-day event will begin Friday, Sept. 24, when Amherst plays Brandeis (6 p.m.) and Westfield State (8 p.m.). The Jeffs will then host Coast Guard Saturday at 3 p.m.
