Amherst Guts Out 3-2 Win Over Coast Guard at Home
Callie Neilson had a season-high 52 assists

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College volleyball team wrapped up a 3-0 weekend at the 2010 Amherst Classic, earning a 3-2 win over Coast Guard Academy this afternoon at LeFrak Gymnasium. After dropping the opening set 25-23, the Lord Jeffs won the next two frames 25-15 and 25-16, before losing the fourth stanza 25-20. In the decisive fifth set, Amherst rushed out to an 8-4 lead and held on for a 15-5 win to seal the match.
Amherst picked up wins over Brandeis University and Westfield State College last night in day one of the Classic, beating the Judges 3-0 and the Owls 3-1. The trio of wins this weekend improves the Lord Jeffs to 8-1 on the year, while Coast Guard falls to 9-4 with the loss. Amherst will travel to face Bates and Colby next weekend in Lewiston, Maine.
In today’s win over the Bears, Amherst’s offense was powered once again by the high-powered trio of Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, CA), Mary Reiser (New York, NY) and Katherine Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, CA), while getting another pair of strong performances from middle hitters Jackie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) and Laura Hyman (Glencoe, IL).
Meier led the team with 17 kills, while Kanoff and Meier added 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Hyman and Berkley chipped in with a combined 17 kills and five blocks. Reiser led the team on defense with five blocks, including four solos. Sophomore setter Callie Neilson (Escondido, CA) dished out a season-high 52 assists in the win, once again serving as the team’s playmaker.
Amherst’s backline was led by Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA) with 44 digs, while Devin Pence (Los Angeles, CA) added 15 digs. Senior Erin Camp (Santa Monica, CA) had eight digs in the effort as well.
Coast Guard was led in the loss by 17 kills from Nicole Johnson and 12 kills and five blocks from Kelsey DePorto. Karen Matic had 39 assists in the loss for the Bears, while captain Jessica Anderson had 21 digs.
