Amherst Completes Dominant Weekend with 3-0 Win Over Colby
The Lord Jeffs have won seven straight to improve to 10-1 (2-1 NESCAC) on the season.
LEWISTON, ME – The Amherst College volleyball team wrapped up a dominant weekend with a 3-0 win over Colby College Saturday morning at Bates College’s Alumni Gymnasium. The Lord Jeffs’ seventh consecutive win bumps them to 10-1 (2-1 NESCAC) on the season, while the Mules drop to 4-9 (0-4 NESCAC).
Amherst won the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-20 before cruising to a 25-8 victory in the final frame. The Jeffs will continue their six-match road trip Wednesday, Oct. 6, when they head to Western New England College for a 7 p.m. meeting with the Golden Bears.
Now in her 25th season at the helm of the Amherst volleyball team, head coach Sue Everden and her Lord Jeffs have boasted a record of at least 10-1 after the first 11 matches in four of the past five years. Everden’s teams have finished with at least 20 victories in four consecutive years and in 14 of the past 15.
Callie Neilson ’13 (Escondido, CA) finished with 37 assists and eight digs to lead a well balanced Amherst attack. Leading the team in kills were Cristy Meier ’12 (San Anselmo, CA) with 11, Katherine Kanoff ’12 (Pacific Palisades, CA) with 10, Jackie Berkley ’11 (Fullerton, CA) with six, Mary Reiser ’12 (New York, NY) with five and Laura Hyman ’11 (Glencoe, IL) with three.
Berkley led Amherst’s dominant play at the net with seven total blocks, while Reiser and Hyman had four apiece and Meier chipped in with two. Erin Camp ’11 (Santa Monica, CA) had a team-high 18 digs, with Rachel Yorke ’11 (Los Angeles, CA) close behind at 15. Devin Pence ’14 (Los Angeles, CA) picked up 10 digs to round out the Jeffs’ top performers.
