Jeffs Upset Tufts to Open Big NESCAC Weekend

MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Amherst College volleyball team opened a pivotal weekend with a 3-1 upset win over Tufts University Friday evening in a neutral NESCAC match played at Middlebury College. The Lord Jeffs improve to 12-1 (3-1 NESCAC) with their ninth consecutive win, while the Jumbos drop to 14-4 (5-1).

Amherst dropped the first set, 25-19, but rallied to win the next three (25-22, 25-16, 25-22) against the top-ranked team in the New England Women’s Volleyball Association Regional Poll. The Lord Jeffs will remain in Middlebury to take on Bowdoin College (12-6, 5-1 NESCAC) Saturday at 11 a.m.

Amherst entered the weekend ranked seventh in the region. Rachel Yorke ’11 (Los Angeles, CA) highlighted the Lord Jeffs’ evening with 38 digs, while Erin Camp ’11 (Santa Monica, CA) and Devin Pence ’14 (Los Angeles, CA) added 23 and 18, respectively.

Callie Neilson ’13 (Escondido, CA) recorded 46 assists, with juniors Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, CA) and Katherine Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, CA) once again leading the Amherst attack by picking up 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Laura Hyman ’11 (Glencoe, IL) had eight kills and six total blocks, Jackie Berkley ’11 (Fullerton, CA) added seven kills and a pair of blocks, and Mary Reiser ’12 (New York, NY) totaled five kills to go along with two blocks.
