Jeffs Wrap up Outstanding Weekend with 3-0 Win Over Bowdoin

MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Amherst College volleyball team wrapped up an outstanding weekend with a 3-0 win over Bowdoin College Saturday morning at Middlebury College’s Pepin Gymnasium. The Lord Jeffs improve to 13-1 (4-1 NESCAC) with their 10th consecutive win, while the Polar Bears fall to 12-7 (5-2 NESCAC).

Amherst rode its momentum from last night’s upset win over Tufts into today’s match, cruising past the Polar Bears in the opening set by a 25-12 margin. Bowdoin jumped out to an early lead in the second frame, but the Jeffs rallied and pulled away for a 25-20 result. Amherst closed out its weekend with a 25-18 win in the third set.

Rachel Yorke ’11 (Los Angeles, CA), Erin Camp ’11 (Santa Monica, CA) and Devin Pence ’14 (Los Angeles, CA) had Amherst’s top three dig totals for the second time in as many days, finishing with 19, nine and eight, respectively.

Cristy Meier ’12 (San Anselmo, CA) and Katherine Kanoff ’12 (Pacific Palisades, CA) once again led the attack by combining for 21 kills, with Laura Hyman ’11 (Glencoe, IL) and Mary Reiser ’12 (New York, NY) chipping in with six apiece and Jackie Berkley ’11 (Fullerton, CA) adding five. Callie Nielson ’13 (Escondido, CA) had 40 assists.

Amherst is off to its best start since the 2007 squad won 18 of its first 19 matches. The Lord Jeffs will return to action Wednesday, Oct. 13, when they head to Westfield State University for a 7 p.m. meeting with the Owls.
