Rachel Yorke '11 Named NESCAC Volleyball Player of the Week
AMHERST, MA – Amherst senior tri-captain Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA) was named the NESCAC Volleyball Player of the Week this afternoon for her play during a 4-0 week for the Lord Jeffs. With NESCAC wins over Trinity, Wesleyan and Conn College at home this weekend, Amherst vaulted into first place in the conference standings with a 7-1 NESCAC record (17-1 overall).
Yorke averaged 7.43 digs per set in four matches this week, registering an outstanding receiving percentage of .915, with 71 total reception attempts. She recorded 31 digs in a 3-1 win over Trinity, and 35 digs in a similar win over Conn College. Against the Camels, Yorke had no errors on 12 total reception attempts.
Amherst has won 14 straight matches, with Yorke leading the defense with 6.94 digs per set during the streak. For the season, Yorke is averaging a career-high 6.60 digs per set, and currently sits on 2,100 digs during her stellar career for the Lord Jeffs.
It’s a three-team race to host the 2010 NESCAC Volleyball Championship with only two weeks to go. While Amherst took over first place, Middlebury faltered against the Camels and the Bantams and fell into a two-way tie for second. Amherst and Middlebury still have yet to play Williams, and the Ephs could claim the top spot with wins against the two on the final weekend of the regular season.
The Jeffs return to action tomorrow night for their regular season home finale against non-conference foe Eastern Connecticut State University. Amherst will play at least three games at the Hall of Fame Classic this weekend, and after a road game at Smith next Wednesday will close out the regular season against Hamilton and Williams in Clinton, N.Y.
