Volleyball Closes in on Top Seed with 3-2 Win Over Williams

CLINTON, NY – The Amherst College volleyball team moved to within one win of securing the top seed in the upcoming NESCAC Championship with a 3-2 win over Little Three archrival Williams College this evening.

With a 22-2 record (8-1 NESCAC) after tonight’s win, the Jeffs can earn hosting rights for the 2010 conference tournament with a win over the Hamilton Continentals tomorrow afternoon. Amherst hosted the 2007 NESCAC Championship, with Tuft University hosting each of the last two post-season tournaments.

In this evening’s win, Amherst jumped out a two sets to none lead after winning the first two frames 25-22 and 25-17. The Ephs responded by winning the third and fourth sets 25-21 and 25-16, before Amherst gutted out an 18-16 win in the fifth and final set.

Leading the charge for Amherst was Cristy Meier (San Anselmo, CA) with 16 kills. Katherine Kanoff (Pacific Palisades, CA) and Jackie Berkley (Fullerton, CA) each had nine kills for Amherst, while Berkley and Mary Reiser (New York, NY) each had six blocks. Laura Hyman (Glencoe, IL) led the front line on defense with nine blocks of her own. Rachel Yorke (Los Angeles, CA) led the back line with 40 digs, while Callie Neilson (Escondido, CA) had 51 assists.

For the Ephs, Kate Anderson had a match high 25 kills, while Eleanor Levine had 13 kills, four blocks and an ace. Nicole Ballon-Landa had 11 kills, while Emily Avis dished out 48 assists with 14 digs and three aces for Williams. Aly McKinnon had 20 digs for the Ephs as well.

Amherst will take on Hamilton tomorrow at 1:30 to wrap up the regular season. The conference tournament will open up play next weekend on the campus of the top seed.
