Jeffs Open Season with Pair of 3-0 Wins

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – The Amherst College volleyball team opened its 2012 season with a pair of 3-0 victories on Saturday, defeating the University of Saint Joseph and host Mount Holyoke College at Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.
Amherst (2-0) bumped its winning streak in season openers to nine matches, while Mount Holyoke (1-1) defeated Saint Joseph (1-5) in the day’s first match by a score of 3-2.
The Lord Jeffs were in control from start to finish, surrendering only 22 points to Saint Joseph (25-11, 25-4, 25-7) before allowing 29 against the Lyons (25-5, 25-17, 25-7).
Emily Waterhouse ’13, Lauren Antion ’15 and Lizzie Ahern ’16 had four kills apiece against the Blue Jays, with Nicole Carter ’16 handing out 20 assists in her debut. Katie Warshaw ’16 led the team with nine digs, with Carter and Waterhouse adding six apiece.
Amherst switched up its formation against Mount Holyoke, leading to 17 assists for Warshaw and 13 for Callie Neilson ’13. Waterhouse paced the Jeffs with 10 kills, while Ahern was close behind with eight. Abigail Hunter ’13 and Sammy Newby ’16 combined for 10 kills and four blocks, Kristin Keeno ’13 had 11 digs, and Warshaw recorded three service aces.
The Lord Jeffs will return to action for their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 11, when they take on Emerson College at 7 p.m. in LeFrak Gymnasium.
