BRUNSWICK, Maine - Despite a team-high 13 kills from first-year Lizzie Ahern, the Amherst women’s volleyball team suffered its first setback of the season with a 3-1 (11-25, 18-25, 25-18, 21-25) loss to 25th-ranked Bowdoin.
Now 3-1 on the season, the Jeffs drop to just 1-4 against Bowdoin over the last five meetings, having lost four-straight dating back to the 2010 season.
Digging a 2-0 hole, while struggling to gain traction offensively, Amherst rebounded with a .350 hitting percentage in the third set en route to a 25-18 win. Hoping to carry the momentum into the following frame, the Jeffs battled the Polar Bears to a 21-21 tie late, before the home team rattled off four-consecutive points to close it out.
Bowdoin’s Melissa Haskell ’13 led the way with a match-high 16 kills, adding 10 digs. Christy Jewett ’16 added 14 kills and five blocks, while Sophia Cornew ’14 finished with 38 assists and 15 digs.
Emily Waterhouse had seven digs for Amherst, while Abigail Hunter ’13, Lauren Antion ’15 and Sammy Newby ’16 each added six. Nicole Carter ’16 dished out 32 assists, while Kristin Keeno ’12 collected 24 digs.
The Jeffs will look to break back into the win column on Saturday, Sept. 15 against Tufts.
