AMHERST, Mass. – Sammy Newby ’16 ripped a career-high 13 kills as the Amherst College volleyball team rallied after dropping the first set to defeat archrival Williams, 3-1, Saturday at LeFrak Gym. Tied for first in the conference heading into the contest, the Ephs took the opener, 25-21, but the Lord Jeffs roared to life and took the match with wins of 25-17, 25-23, and 25-18.

The win improves Amherst to 10-5 (5-3 NESCAC) and completes a huge home weekend for the Jeffs, who knocked off then-second place Middlebury, 3-2, on Friday night. Williams falls to 12-7 (6-2 NESCAC) with the setback.

Newby hit .406 en route to the biggest performance of her rookie season, including five big kills in the tight third set and the winning shot in the fourth. Lizzie Ahern ’16 matched her classmate with 13 kills, while Emily Waterhouse ’13 turned in a brilliant all-around effort with 12 kills, four aces, 14 digs, and a pair of blocks. Nicole Carter ’16 directed the Jeff offense to the tune of 42 assists, while Katie Warshaw ’16 led the defensive effort for Amherst with 28 digs and Abigail Hunter ’13 was a force near the net with seven blocks.

Emily Dol and Raea Rasmussen led a balanced attack for Williams with 11 kills apiece, while setter Ryan Farley filled the stat sheet with 34 assists, 15 digs, and a trio of aces. Emily O’Day led the Eph defense with 19 digs.

After Williams took the opener, Amherst responded in a big way with Waterhouse leading the charge, posting five kills in the second set. Williams kept things tight in the third, but Newby and the Jeffs were too much, escaping with the 25-23 win and carrying momentum into a strong final set. Lauren Antion ’15 recorded back-to-back kills to put the Jeffs up 24-16, before Newby’s eventual winner clinched the impressive victory for Amherst in its final regular season contest at LeFrak.

The Jeffs will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 16, traveling to Simmons for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
