Jeffs Open Classic Play With 3-1 Loss to Springfield

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Despite senior Emily Waterhouse’s 16 kills and 10 digs, the Amherst women’s volleyball team opened play at the 2012 Hall of Fame Classic with a  3-1 (25-19, 12-25, 25-23, 25-16) loss to local rival Springfield College.

Dropping the first set 25-19, Amherst (11-6) tied the match with a 25-12 victory in the second. The Pride answered by edging out the Jeffs 25-23 in a pivotal third set before closing things out with a 25-16 triumph in the final frame.

Sammy Newby ’16 finished with 11 kills, while Lizzie Ahern ’16 and Lauren Antion ’15 each added six spikes apiece. Kristin Keeno ’13 and Katie Warshaw ’16 collected 10 and nine digs, respectively, while Nicole Carter ’16 picked up 36 assists and eight digs.

The Lord Jeffs continue Classic play on Saturday, Oct. 20 with matches against Wellesley at 11 a.m. and MIT at 3 p.m.
