Tough Weekend Continues as Jeffs Drop Pair

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – A tough weekend at the Hall of Fame Invitational continued for the Amherst College volleyball team as the Jeffs dropped a pair of non-conference matches on the campus of Mt. Holyoke College Saturday, first falling to Wellesley before dropping the nightcap to MIT, both by 3-1 margins.
The Lord Jeffs fell to 11-8 on the season with the setbacks, heading into the final week of regular season play.
Amherst couldn’t hold off a furious Blue comeback in the morning match, falling to Wellesley, 3-1 (25-14, 16-25, 19-25, 23-25). After an impressive 25-14 victory in the first set, the Jeffs saw the Blue take over, cruising to 25-16 and 25-19 wins in the next two before escaping with a 25-23 in the decisive fourth.
Lauren Antion ’15 led Amherst with 15 kills in the opener, also adding a pair of aces and three blocks. Emily Waterhouse ’13 put forth another strong all-around effort, tallying eight kills, three aces, and 12 digs, while Lizzie Ahern ’16 and Abigail Hunter ’13 each finished with five kills. Nicole Carter ’16 directed the offense en route to 31 assists, while Katie Warshaw ’16 and Kristin Keeno ’13 helped the defensive effort with six and five digs, respectively.
Sydney Carfagno ’15 led Wellesley, hitting .500 with 16 kills and Vivian Hu ’13 notched 18 digs as the Blue improved to 24-4 with the win.
The nightcap saw MIT rush to wins of 25-20 and 25-17 in the opening sets. Amherst took the third, 25-18, but the Engineers prevailed in a dramatic fourth set, 29-27.
Antion again led the attack for the Jeffs, finishing with 14 kills while also tallying four blocks and a pair of digs. Waterhouse tallied nine kills and six digs, while Carter dished out 28 assists and Callie Neilson ’13 returned to action to post 10 helpers. Keeno led the defense with 24 digs, while Carter posted 16 and Warshaw 10.
Amherst returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 24, with a 7 p.m. non-conference match at nearby Smith College.
