Volleyball Sweeps Colby, 3-0

WATERVILLE, Maine - Lizzie Ahern ’16 had 12 kills and three blocks as the Amherst College volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-23, 25-8, 26-24) win over Colby College at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Amherst moves to 13-8 overall and 6-3 in conference play heading into Saturday's road match at Bates College, while the Mules fall to 12-11 (2-7 NESCAC).
Emily Waterhouse ’13 finished with eight kills and 12 digs, while Kristin Keeno ’13 collected 16 digs. First-year setter Nicole Carter added 34 assists, eight digs and two aces.
Kim Donaldson ’16 had six of her team-high 11 kills in the third set and added a match-high five blocks. Maggie Taylor ’13 chipped in with nine kills and 16 digs, while Emily Varni ’13 also had 16 digs. Kate Pleasants ’14 dished out 25 assists.
Colby fought back from a 14-9 deficit in the first set by using an 8-0 scoring run to take a 17-14 lead. With the set knotted at 22-22, Amherst won two straight points to build a two-point margin. After a Taylor spike pulled the home team back within one, the Jeffs notched the final point to close out the frame.
Amherst came out strong in the second set, taking leads of 9-2 and 16-4 en route to a 25-8 victory. Colby fought back a few times in the final set to nearly force a fourth game. The Jeffs had an early 6-3 lead only to see the Mules pull even at 11. With the visitors up 23-17, Colby ran off seven straight points to take a 24-23 lead. Amherst responded with three-straight to pull out the match.
