SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Amherst women’s volleyball team (0-1, 0-0 NESCAC) dropped a 3-0 decision in its season opener Friday night to Springfield College (2-0). The Jeffs lost 25-15, 25-12 and 26-24 at Blake Arena in the Springfield Invitational.
The Pride opened up the first set with consecutive kills from Kelsey McGayhey ‘16 and Tessa Smolinski ‘14 and never looked back. Amherst cut the deficit to three following three straight points to trail 13-10 before Springfield rallied 12 of the next 17 points to claim the set 25-15.
Springfield’s momentum carried over into the second set as they jumped out to a 4-0 advantage. Despite a four-point rally by the Jeffs to tie the set a 9-9, the Pride pulled away. Springfield entered the third set ahead 2-0.
Amherst showed perseverance in the third and final set. Trailing 9-8, the Jeffs put together eight straight points to go ahead by seven. A kill from Nicole Carter ’16 late in the set gave Amherst a 21-18 lead. However, after a short rally from Springfield, the teams exchanged points down the stretch until consecutive kills from the Pride put the match away.
Offensively, the Jeffs were led by first years Maggie Danner and Jackie Buechler with seven and six kills respectively. Nicole Carter ’16 dished out 14 assists. Kate Bres ‘17 and Katie Warshaw ‘16 totaled 11 digs each while Danner added 10 to round out the top defensive performances for Amherst.
The Jeffs return to the court Saturday morning for a 9 a.m. match at the Springfield Invitational.
