Jeffs Sweep Middlebury, 3-0

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Amherst women’s volleyball team extended its win streak to four matches with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-20) victory over NESCAC rival Middlebury.
With the win, the Jeffs improved to 12-5 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while the Panthers, dropping their first home match of 2013, fell to 13-2 (3-2 NESCAC).
Getting off to a fast start, Amherst jumped out to a 9-2 first set lead. The Panthers closed the gap to 10-5 before the visitors extended their cushion and comfortably took the first set, 25-16, hitting .478.
Tied at 4-4 in the second frame, Amherst mounted an 8-2 run to build a six-point margin. The Panthers came within four at 18-14, but the Jeffs closed the set on a 7-3 spurt to go ahead 2-0.
Middlebury jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the third set behind the serving of Kathryn Haderlein ’16 and a pair of kills from Amy Hart ’14. The Panthers led 10-3 when the Jeffs mounted a comeback, rattling off five straight points to cut the lead to 10-8. The surge continued as they took their first lead of the set at 14-13.
Middlebury came back, leading 19-16 before the Jeffs closed the match on a 9-1 run. Lauren Antion ’15 had a big kill during the decisive stretch, closing out a lengthy point to give her team a 24-20 lead, before sealing the win on the next point.
Megan Jarchow ’14 and Hart led Middlebury with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while Haderlein collected 21 assists and 13 digs. Maggie Danner ’17 hammered home a match-high 14 kills with a .414 hitting percentage to pace the Amherst attack, while Antion and Nicole Gould ’17 added seven apiece. Danner also tallied a team-high 14 digs, while Nicole Carter ’16 had 29 assists.
Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 12 at Hamilton.
