Danner, Gould Rally Comeback as Jeffs Win 3-1 Over Wellesley

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – First-years Maggie Danner and Nicole Gould guided the Amherst women’s volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Wellesley Friday night in the Hall of Fame Tournament hosted by Mount Holyoke College.
Danner totaled 15 kills while Gould added 14 as the Jeffs (17-5) won their ninth-straight and snapped Wellesley’s (24-3) 12-game winning streak.
After dropping the first set 25-23, Amherst retaliated and rallied off three straight wins by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 25-15 to claim the match.
Nicole Carter ’16 dished out a match-high 35 assists to control the offensive tempo for the Jeffs. On the defensive side, Katie Warshaw ’16 and Kelci Keeno ’17 tallied 18 and 11 digs respectively.
As a team, Amherst was a force at net with 13 total blocks to the Blue’s six. Danner added six solo to go along with her team-high 15 kills.
Sydney Carfagno ’15 and Caitlin Laughlin ’15 led Wellesley with double-digit kills. Carfagno tallied a match-high 17 and added 16 digs while Laughlin registered 10 kills. Traci Hamanaka ’14 led the team with 22 digs and Kellyn O’Brady ’14 tallied 12. Maddie Koh ’17 and Hilary Ayers ’14 dished out 24 and 17 assists respectively.
Amherst returns to the court tomorrow for two more games at the Hall of Fame Tournament. At 9 a.m., they will face Middlebury at Mount Holyoke College and will head to Smith College afterwards for a 3 p.m. contest against MIT.
