Jeffs Edged by Bowdoin in NESCAC Semifinals, 3-2

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The third-seeded Amherst women’s volleyball team fell to No. 2 seed Bowdoin in the NESCAC Semifinals on Saturday at Williams College, 3-2.
The Polar Bears (23-6) advanced to the NESCAC final with the win, dropping the Jeffs (20-8) from the conference tournament. They won by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 15-25, 25-20, and 15-13.
Bowdoin and Amherst battled back and forth often in the first set until Christy Jewett ’16 connected on a service ace to pull ahead, 25-22.
The second set was an even closer battle. Bowdoin took an early lead but Amherst went on a run and jumped ahead, 16-13. After a Bowdoin rally that resulted in six of the next eight points, Amherst retaliated and eventually tied the match at 1-1.
Amherst carried the momentum into the third set and grabbed an early lead, eventually pulling away with a decisive 25-15 win.
Trailing 2-1 in the match, Bowdoin carried a lead for the majority of the fourth set to win 25-20 and force a fifth set.
In the final and definitive set five, the Polar Bears jumped out to a 7-2 lead before Amherst cut the deficit to one following a 5-1 run. Going back and forth the rest of the way, the teams were tied at 13-13 until Bowdoin rallied off the final two points to advance to the NESCAC final.
Nicole Gould ’17 led the Jeffs with 20 kills while Maggie Danner ’17 added 11. Nicole Carter ’16 posted a double-double with 36 assists and a team-high 25 digs. Gould added a double-double as well with 10 digs.
Jewett led the Bowdoin offense with 24 kills while Quincy Leech ’16 dished out 48 assists and added 25 digs.
Amherst waits to see if they earn an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA tournament when the 64-team field is announced on Monday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.
