Alumni Baseball Game a Success

AMHERST, Mass. - Spanning the last seven decades of Amherst baseball, a group of former Lord Jeffs recently returned to Memorial Field for the squad’s annual Alumni game on Saturday, May 26.

Gathering under the watchful eye of former head coach Bill Thurston on a sunny summer day during the College’s Reunion Weekend, the former Jeffs began the morning with a round of batting practice before taking the field for five and a half innings of competitive baseball.

Twenty-two alumni participated in the game with another 10 supporting from the sidelines. Forty-nine years separated the youngest and oldest alums on the field, with a representative from every decade dating back to the 1950’s participating in the event.

"The most remarkable aspect of the game was the level of play,” said current head coach Brian Hamm. “Whether it was Bruce Elliott ’62 or Mike Sheridan ’62 at the plate, Ted Martland ’77 tracking down fly balls, or Brian Merrigan ’11 running the bases, the “Amherst Way” transcended the decades.”
