AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College pitcher and first baseman Bob Cook ’13 was honored for excellence on the playing field and in the classroom Friday, earning a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Currently leading Division III in earned run average (0.52) during a dominant senior season, Cook was one of just two pitchers picked to the District 1 First Team, joining Bowdoin senior ace Oliver Van Zandt on the 11-person squad which represents institutions from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Tufts infielder Scott Staniewicz was also named to the select group while Wesleyan’s Andrew Yin rounded out the NESCAC’s four honorees with a spot on the District 2 First Team.
A mathematics major and 2012 NESCAC All-Academic pick, Cook has been nearly untouchable on the mound this spring, opening the year with a streak of 24.1 innings pitched without surrendering an earned run. Striking out 32 batters while walking only five over 51.2 total innings pitched, the righty also led the nation as of May 1 in walk-plus-hits per inning pitched (WHIP) at 0.77. Having allowed no more than one earned run in each of his eight appearances, Cook notably carried a no-hitter into the ninth inning of a shutout win against Middlebury on April 6.
The 2012 NESCAC Player of the Year, Cook has also been dangerous at the plate again in 2013. Seeing extensive time at first base during the second half of the season, the Winnetka, Ill. native has reached base in his last nine starts in the field, hitting .500 (12-for-24) over the span while upping his team-leading on-base percentage to .467 on the year. The senior has also stolen five bases in six attempts on the year while driving in nine runs in 47 at-bats and tying for the team lead with 12 walks.
Cook now advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second-, and third-team honorees will be selected later this month.
