HADLEY, Mass. – Amherst College right fielder Mike Odenwaelder ’16 was named the NESCAC Baseball Player of the Week on Monday after continuing his standout rookie season with a red-hot stretch at the plate during the Lord Jeffs’ last five games.
A native of Goshen, Conn., Odenwaelder batted .500 (9-for-18) last week, reaching base multiple times in four of Amherst’s five contests. The first-year started the run off with an impressive day at Division I Dartmouth on Tuesday, going 2-for-3 with a walk against a talented Big Green squad which has set a program record for wins this year while finishing as Ivy League runners-up.
Odenwaelder continued his hot hitting in Wednesday’s doubleheader at Eastern Connecticut State, going 3-for-4 with a triple, run scored and two RBIs in the opener then reaching base twice with a single and walk in a 1-for-3 nightcap. The rookie completed the week by going a combined 3-for-8 in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep at Colby, ripping RBI doubles in both ends of the twinbill.
Making a strong case for the NESCAC’s Rookie of the Year award, Odenwaelder leads the conference with a .573 slugging percentage while ranking eighth overall and first among first-years in both batting average (.369) and runs scored (30). The right fielder is tied for the team lead with two home runs and 19 RBIs while also stealing 10 bases in 11 attempts.
Odenwaelder and the Lord Jeffs kick off their postseason on Friday, facing Trinity on the opening day of the NESCAC Championship tournament. Check back later this week for a full playoff preview.
