HADLEY, Mass. – Fred Shepard ’14 and Bob Cook ’13 were named NESCAC Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, after the Amherst College baseball team won its third conference title with a 7-0 win over Wesleyan University on Sunday.
Shepard tossed a complete game shutout in Sunday’s championship matchup to seal Amherst's crown as the junior lefty shut down Wesleyan’s lineup that entered the tournament leading the conference in hitting. Shepard scattered six hits while striking out four and walking one, allowing Cardinal runners past first base in just two innings. He allowed only two baserunners over the opening five frames before leaving Cardinals on first and third in the ninth to end the game.
After battling illness all week, Cook went 7-for-12 (.583) with five runs scored during the tournament and delivered a quality start in Saturday's marathon win over Wesleyan. The senior was 2-for-4 with a double, triple, walk and a pair of runs in Friday's triumph over Trinity before pitching and hitting on Saturday as he went 3-for-5 with a walk and two runs and tossed six innings on the mound, yielding three runs (two earned) on five hits.
On Sunday, the co-captain was 2-for-5 with a run as he and fellow seniors Adam Medoff, Dan Pillitteri and Nolan Stewart became Amherst's all-time winningest class over the weekend. The Jeffs leave for upstate New York tomorrow before facing Rowan at 4:30 p.m. on the opening day of NCAA Regionals Wednesday.
