Gameday Preview: Amherst vs. Cortland

AUBURN, N.Y. – The Amherst College baseball team will look to rebound from its first defeat at the NCAA Regional Tournament on Saturday when it faces SUNY Cortland in the losers’ bracket final at 1 p.m. The elimination game will be the second matchup of the regional between the sixth-seeded Lord Jeffs (27-12) and the second-seeded Red Dragons (37-10), with the winner advancing to face Ithaca and needing a pair of wins over the top-seeded Bombers to claim the tournament title.

GAME DETAILS
Location: Falcon Park, Auburn, N.Y. Tickets are $3, $2 for students and seniors.

FIRST MEETING
Amherst 6, Cortland 3: Bob Cook '13 hurled a complete game and went 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk, RBI and two runs scored, lifting Amherst to a 6-3 upset win over nationally third-ranked Cortland on Thursday night. The Lord Jeffs set a new program record for wins in a season with the triumph, beating their second top-25 opponent in as many days. Full Recap

YESTERDAY
Ithaca 3, Amherst 2: Amherst native and Ithaca senior Jasper Adams threw seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on four hits and lifting the seventh-ranked Bombers to a 3-2 win over the Jeffs in a battle of the two remaining unbeaten teams in the regional. Adams quieted the Lord Jeff bats which had rapped out 31 hits over the first two games at the double-elimination tournament. Also an Amherst native, Fred Shepard ’14 started for the Jeffs against his former high school teammate and lasted 5.2 innings, yielding three runs on six hits and three walks. Full Recap

Cortland 5, RPI 2: Senior Zachary Badanes struck out a career-high 12 batters and allowed only two unearned runs in 7.2 innings as Cortland defeated RPI, 5-2, in an elimination game Friday night. Badanes allowed seven hits and one walk and improved to 5-0 on the season as Cortland broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the bottom of the seventh despite recording only one hit in the inning.
