AMHERST, Mass. – After a successful stint with the Red Sox in the Gulf Coast League, former Amherst College baseball standout Kevin Heller ’12 has been promoted to the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Pennsylvania League, a Class A Short-Season team out of Lowell, Mass.
Two months after being selected by the Boston Red Sox in the Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft, Heller made the trek to Florida to compete in the Gulf Coast League. He hit .263 (10-for-38) in 12 games for the Red Sox, recording three doubles, six walks and 11 runs scored. Heller made an immediate impact and quickly put together a five-game hit streak, hitting safely in eight of 10 games during an impressive stretch.
Heller’s debut with the Spinners took place Thursday night, and he introduced himself to Class A with a line-drive single to right field in his first at-bat. Batting sixth in the lineup, he finished at 1-for-4 with four putouts in right field against the Vermont Lake Monsters.
The next test for Heller will come Friday at 7:05 p.m., when the Spinners take on the Connecticut Tigers, an affiliate of MLB's Detroit Tigers. Friday night’s showdown is the beginning of a six-game road trip, as Lowell’s season will conclude Sept. 5.
Heller graduated from Amherst as the baseball program’s all-time leader in hits (172), runs scored (136), RBIs (126) and total bases (275), also sharing the career home run record (18). He was 41-for-45 on stolen base attempts during his four years as an outfielder and designated hitter, and he is one of only two players in program history to record four consecutive 40-hit seasons.
