MEDFORD, Mass. - The 23rd-ranked Amherst baseball team saw its NESCAC championship run come to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 4-2 loss to Bates College.
Down 2-1 in the eighth, the Bobcats pushed across three runs on three hits and a pair of costly errors to pull out the victory. Dropping to 28-9 overall, Amherst will now hope to receive at-large bid to the upcoming NCAA Division III Championship when the 56-team field is announced on Sunday evening.
Mike Odenwaelder ’16 and Dave Cunningham ’16 each finished 2-for-4 as eight different Jeffs recorded a hit. Dylan Driscoll ’14 surrendered four runs on six hits in seven innings of work, striking out six while issuing just one free pass.

With Bates scratching off its first run in the top of the sixth on a Davis RBI single up the middle, the Jeffs pulled back in front during the bottom of the frame thanks to a Cunningham home run to right.
Still down 2-1 in the eighth, the Bobcats pieced together a rally. Rockwell Jackson ’15 led off the frame by beating out an infield single. Thanks to a couple Amherst errors, Ryan McCarthy ’17 reached and then came all the way around to score with Rockwell. Tewksbury then doubled to left spelling the end of Driscoll’s day. Davis followed up with a double of his own, plating the Bates’ fourth and final run.
