Lord Jeffs Drop 8-4 Result at Williams
Senior Clint Marchese scooped up a team-high
four ground balls at Williams in the effort.
Williams opened the day's scoring just seven seconds into the game, as Corey Jacobs finished off an unassisted score on the first shot of the day. The Ephs needed less than four minutes before Ryan Powell added a second unassisted to goal to double the Williams lead. With 13 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Amherst senior quad-captain and goalie Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) was unable to keep a Richard Reuter shot out of the net, leaving the Jeffs trailing 3-0 at the end of the first frame.
Neither team scored in the first five minutes of the second stanza, before Williams opened up a 4-0 lead on a Sam Hargrove man-up goal. The Lord Jeffs responded with 6:07 to play in the second, as first-year Evan Redwood (Lutherville, MD) put home an unassisted goal. Less than a minute later, Amherst rookie Alex Fox (Garden City, NY) put home a feed from Matt Rawson (Bethesda, MD) on the man-up to cut the Williams lead to 4-2.
Just as Amherst looked primed to close the gap further, Williams ended the first half with another late goal, once again off the stick of Hargrove. The response put the Ephs back up three goals, with just 58 seconds to play in the second quarter.
The third quarter saw just a single goal, with Hargrove assisting to David Hawley to put Williams on top 6-2. The Ephs scored the first two goals of the final frame to open up an 8-2 lead with five minutes to play. Amherst refused to give up against their archrivals, and scored the game's final two goals. Rookie Cole Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) and Brett Miller (Wantagh, NY) picked up the final two tallies for the Jeffs.
Amherst will have a full week off before hosting Wesleyan next weekend to close out Little Three play for the 2009 season. The Lord Jeffs and Cardinals are set to start at 1 p.m. on Amherst's Gooding Field.
