Amherst Places Seven on IWLCA All-Region Team; Hoeg, McEvoy Selected to Play in North-South Senior All-Star Game

Junior Mary Noonan has earned IWLCA All-Region honors in each of her three years at Amherst.

AMHERST, MA – The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) announced today the 224 Division III student-athletes honored with a selection to one of the All-Region teams for 2008, with Amherst College earning seven honors for the Berkshire Region. In addition, two members of the Lord Jeff squad have been selected to play in the 2008 IWLCA/Under Armour North-South Senior All-Star Game in June.

Amherst College is one of only three schools in Division III to place at least seven players on an All-Region Team. These student-athletes are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-America teams, which will be announced on May 29. The IWLCA and US Lacrosse will honor the National All-Americans at an awards banquet on June 14, 2008 in Downingtown, Pennsylvania.

Earning IWLCA First Team honors for the Berkshire Region are juniors Amy Craig (Denver, CO) and Catherine Calvert (Lawrenceville, NJ), who each claimed a spot on the All-NESCAC First Team this season as well. Craig is no stranger to the All-Region Team, as she was a Second Team selection during her rookie season before grabbing First Team plaudits last year.

A pair of seniors joins Calvert and Craig on the All-Region First Team, as midfielder Maddie Hoeg (Shoreham, NY) and goalie Linda McEvoy (Rochester, NY) added to their list of postseason accolades. McEvoy was an All-NESCAC First Team selection this year and improves upon her All-Region Second Team honor of a year ago, while Hoeg is a first-time selection to the All-Region squad after earning a spot on the All-NESCAC Second Team.

Hoeg and McEvoy have each been selected to play in the 2008 IWLCA/Under Armour North-South Senior All-Star Game, which will be held at the USTC in Downingtown on Saturday, June 14, the same day as the awards banquet for the National All-Americans. Hoeg and McEvoy will join six other NESCAC players as part of the 20-woman North roster.

Two sophomores represent Amherst on the IWLCA All-Region Second Team, as Kathleen Scheld (Yorktown Heights, NY) and Tyler Tory-Murphy (Sea Cliff, NY) grabbed the first postseason honors of their respective collegiate careers. Joining the sophomore tandem is junior midfielder Mary Noonan (West Roxbury, MA). A three-time IWLCA All-Region honoree, Noonan was a First Team selection in each of her first two years at Amherst and an All-America Second Team recipient during her rookie campaign.

These seven players helped lead the Lord Jeffs back to the NCAA Championship Tournament, as Amherst held on to a #11 ranking in the latest IWLCA Coaches Poll. The Jeffs cruised to a win over Endicott in the first round before upsetting sixth-ranked Washington & Lee in the Round of 16, but Amherst (15-4) had its season come to an end at the hands of third-ranked Franklin & Marshall in the national quarterfinals.

Of the 224 All-Region honorees, nearly 20 percent (44) are members of NESCAC teams. National powerhouses TCNJ and Salisbury joined Amherst as the only schools with at least seven All-Region selections, as TCNJ had seven and Salisbury had eight.
