PALM BEACH, CA - The 14th-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team suffered an 11-6 loss at the hands of Messiah College for Amherst's first defeat of 2010. The Lord Jeffs trailed just 4-2 at halftime, but could not rally for a comeback in the second stanza. Amherst will return from its Spring Break trip with a 2-1 overall record after splitting a pair of games in Florida.

The Lord Jeffs out-shot Messiah on the day, but could not get their offense going this afternoon to out-score the Falcons. The Lord Jeffs were led offensively by sophomore Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, CT), who put in a pair of goals with one assist. Senior Hannah Walker (Greenwich, CT) added a pair of goals, while rookie Hillary Densen (Summit, NJ) had a single goal. First-year Marta Randall (Monkton, MD) had a goal and reigning NESCAC Player of the Week Kelley Trapp (Monterey, CA) had a pair of assists in the loss.

Messiah was led by Rachel Dirksen, who had scored 14 goals in the Falcons' first four games of the season. Amherst's defense was unable to cool Dirksen's hot hand, as the Messiah sophomore scored a game-high eight goals against the Lord Jeffs.

Amherst sophomore goalie Lamia Harik (Rye Brook, NY) made four saves in the loss, her first of the season.

The Lord Jeffs will return to campus following today's game, and will take the field for the next time against NESCAC foe Conn. College for Amherst's 2010 Home Opener. The Jeffs and Camels will play on Gooding Field in Amherst next Wednesday, March 24 at 7 p.m.
