Jeffs Finish 7th at Yellow Jacket Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Naomi Bates ’14 and Karen Blake ’17 won two events to lead the Amherst College women’s outdoor track and field team Saturday at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by AIC.
The Jeffs finished seventh out of 20 teams with 44 points in a field that featured Division I, II and III schools. Vermont won the meet with 177.50 points followed by Tufts (75.50) in second and AIC (57) in third. The University of New Haven and Central Connecticut rounded out the top-five with 55.50 and 52 points, respectively.
Blake highlighted the day for Amherst in track events. The first-year won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.30 seconds, beating out Marshae Holt ’16 of New Haven who finished second in 12.52. Blake also finished second in the 200 meter dash with a mark of 25.07. Victoria Hensley ’16 competed in the event as well and finished 14th with a time of 26.92.
Bates picked up a win in field events for Amherst, claiming the long jump with a leap of 5.88 meters.
The Jeffs grabbed five other top-10 finishes in track events. The 4x100 meter relay ‘A’ squad finished third in 49.01. Lisa Walker ’14 and Hannah Herrera ’17 both grabbed sixth-place marks in the 5000 and 1500 meter runs, respectively. Walker finished in 12:08.54 and Herrara crossed the finish line in 4:54.07.
Hensley also placed eighth in the 400 meter. She finished in 1:00.65 while teammate Keelin Moehl ’16 ran in 1:02.40 to claim 11th.
The other top-10 finish came from Amy Dao ’14 in the 800 meter run, taking seventh in 2:25.08.
Rounding out the top performances on the day for Amherst were Betsy Black ’16 and Louise Atadja ’16. Black finished 11th in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:08.54 and Atadja took 13th in the triple jump with a leap of 9.53 meters.
The Jeffs are back on the track Saturday, Apr. 12 for the UMass Invitational.
