Jeffs Finish 11th at New England Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Naomi Bates ’14 led the Amherst College women’s outdoor track and field team to an 11th-place finish at the New England Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Springfield College.
MIT won the championships by a large margin with 132 points while Williams finished second (85) and Tufts placed third (50). Rounding out the top-five was Middlebury (47) and Bates (45). The Jeffs finished 11th with 30 points.
Bates won the long jump and recorded a new program record with a mark of 5.99 meters, currently the best mark in Division III. She now holds the top-four distances in the long jump in Amherst College women’s outdoor track & field history. The senior All-American also finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.13 meters.
In track events, the 4x100 meter relay team took home a first-place finish with the fifth fastest DIII time in the country of 47.72 seconds, while Karen Blake ’17 highlighted the meet in individual performances by placing third in the 200 meter dash with a mark of 24.88. Blake's mark is currently the 22nd fastest among DIII runners this outdoor season.
Capturing another top-10 finish for the Jeffs was Victoria Hensley ’16. The sophomore finished eighth in the 400 meter dash by crossing the finish line in 58.71 seconds.
Rounding out the top performances were Elizabeth Briskin ’15 and Keelin Moehl ’16. Briskin finished 14th in the 800 meter run (2:21.82) and Moehl placed 14th in the 5,000 meter run (18:20.00).
Amherst returns to the track Friday, May 9 for the two-day All-New England Championships hosted by Westfield State.
