DELAWARE, Ohio – A day after winning the NCAA outdoor national championship in the long jump, Naomi Bates ’14 continued to impress, qualifying for the finals of the women’s 100-meter dash.
Turning in a time of 11.98, Bates will be one of eight student-athletes that will compete in tomorrow’s final. Also entered into the event, first-year Karen Blake crossed the finish line in 12.13 – good for 14th overall.
In the women’s field events, Kiana Herold ’17 lived up to a tremendous rookie campaign with an eighth-place showing in the high jump. Tying her own school record mark of 1.70m, she narrowly edged out Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Kayla Ashland, Stevens’ Gladys Njuko ’16 and SUNY Geneseo’s Joanna Heath ’17 (1.67m) to factor into the team scoring.
On the men’s side, Matt Melton ’14 failed to qualify for the 400-meter finals. Concluding a decorated career, Melton finished 18th overall with a time of 49.24. Prior to nationals, his time of 47.71 seconds at the NEICAAA Outdoor Championships was the sixth fastest in Division III as he finished third overall at the meet that featured Division I, II and III schools.
