AMHERST, Mass. – Naomi Bates ’14 broke the school record while winning the long jump and Keri Lambert ’13 notched Division III’s second-lowest time in the steeplechase as the Amherst College women’s track and field team enjoyed a strong showing at the University of Massachusetts Invitational on Saturday.

Scoring 35 team points, the Jeffs finished eighth among 19 teams from Divisions I, II, and III. With Connecticut (108) edging out Boston College (106) for the team title, Amherst trailed only sixth-place Williams (53) among DIII programs.

Abbeh Anderson ’15 picked up the Jeffs’ first points of the day with a strong showing in the 200 meters as she paced all Division III competitors with a fifth-place time of 25.52. Later, Lauren Almeida ’13 highlighted Amherst’s middle-distance efforts as she took fourth in the 1500 at 4:39.30, the No. 15 time nationally for DIII.

Meanwhile, Sarah Daly ’13 continued her outstanding spring in the 5k as she vaulted to DIII’s 10th spot nationally with a fifth-place time of 17:26.89. Lizzy Briskin ’15 grabbed Amherst three more points in the event as she followed Daly across the line, taking sixth in 17:46.61 and reaching No. 38 on the national list.

In the last event before relays, Lambert competed in her first steeplechase of the spring and the defending national champion did not disappoint, placing second overall and more than a minute ahead of the next DIII racer as she clocked a 10:42.65, good for the No. 2 time nationally on the year.

Finally, Bates saved the Jeffs’ best for last as she capped the big day for Amherst with a school-record performance in the long jump, outdistancing a pair of competitors from the host Minutewomen and landing at third on the DIII national list with a winning mark of 5.84 meters. The effort broke Nicole Campbell's former Amherst standard set in 1999.

The Jeffs will be back in action next Saturday, April 20, at the Little III Championships, hosted by Williams.
