WATERVILLE, Maine - Setting a facility record in the 10,000-meter run, Sarah Daly ’13 led the Amherst women’s track and field team to a ninth-place showing out of 27 programs at the 2013 Division III New England Championships.
Finishing over 10 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Daly clocked in at 35:39.04, just two one hundredths of a second under the track’s 21-year old record set in 1992 by Carnegie Mellon’s Carolyn Lowe.
Turning in another solid showing, Keri Lambert ’13 also bested an old facility benchmark in the 1500-meter run, but lagged just over eight tenths of a second behind the pace set by MIT’s Brooke Johnson (4:33.05) to finish third (4:33.88). Lauren Almeida ’13 also enjoyed a strong race, placing eighth with a time of 4:36.98.
Teaming up with Lambert and Almeida, Keelin Moehl ’16 and Amy Dao ’14 helped the Jeffs win the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:10.81, breaking the school's old record set in 2008 by Carly Levenson, Molly Priedeman, Mellissa Sullivan and Zandra Walton (9:14.42). Leading Amherst’s sprinters, Naomi Bates ’14 came in fourth in the 200m dash (25.56), while also logging a pair of top-10 performances in 100m event (7th - 12.71) and the long jump (10th - 4.99m).
MIT took home the team title with 126.50 points, followed by Tufts (93), host Colby (78), Williams (75) and Worcester State (50) in the top five. Springfield placed sixth with a total score of 46, while WPI (45), Bowdoin (38), Amherst (34) and Middlebury (33) came in sixth through 10th.
