Ben Scheetz '11 Named NESCAC Track Performer of the Week
AMHERST, MA – Amherst College junior Ben Scheetz (Lancaster, PA) has been named the NESCAC Men’s Track Performer of the Week, the conference announced today. Scheetz is the first Lord Jeff in two years to earn the weekly honor.
Scheetz began his week by setting a school record in the 800-meter run at Princeton University’s Larry Ellis Memorial Invitational. Already Amherst’s indoor record holder in the 400, 500, 600 and 800, Scheetz broke his first outdoor record with a time of 1:48.71 on Friday, 1.51 seconds faster than Robert Mitchell’s best mark of 1:50.22.
Scheetz then led Amherst at Saturday’s Little Three Championships by taking part in two of his team’s six victories. After winning the 200-meter dash in 22.52 seconds, he teamed up with Tommy Moore ’11, Matt Melton ’14 and Andrew Reed ’12 to post the top time in the 4x400-meter relay (3:22.79).
The NESCAC began recognizing track and field performers of the week in 2008. Three Amherst runners have been recognized since then, as Scheetz joins Elise Tropiano ’09 and Dan Murner ’10.
The Lord Jeffs will return to action this Saturday when they head to Wesleyan for the NESCAC Championships.
