Jeffs Take Fifth at AIC Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Matt Melton ’14 won the 400 meters and Andrew Erskine ’13 triumphed in the 10k to highlight the efforts of the Amherst College men’s track and field team at the American International College Invitational on Saturday. Facing Division I, II, and III competition, the Jeffs placed fifth of 18 programs with 63 team points.
Ralph Washington ’16 picked up Amherst’s first point of the day, taking eighth in the 200-meter dash (23.12) before Melton delivered the nation’s eighth-fastest 400 among Division III competitors this year, winning in 48.75 seconds.
In the middle distances, Pat Grimes ’13 took seventh in the 800 (1:56.76) before an even stronger showing in the 1500 as the senior placed second in 3:57.36, the No. 13 time in D-III this spring. Greg Turissini ’15 (4:03.08) and Charlie Reighard ’14 (4:03.45) also scored in the event, placing sixth and seventh, respectively.
Amherst’s long-distance unit was well-represented in the 10,000 meters as Erskine outpaced a nine-man field in 32:12.21, followed by KC Fussell ’15, who took second in 32:19.28.
The Jeffs’ 4x100 Meter Relay had a strong showing, placing fifth in 45.83 before a strong showing by the field unit. Stephen Hetterich ’15 placed seventh in the triple jump (12.41m) and Denzel Duncan ’13 matched his finish in the shot put (12.81m) before Josiah Terrell-Perica ’15 placed eighth in the discus (37.12m). Duncan and Terrell-Perica were even stronger in the Hammer Throw, however, taking fourth and fifth with marks of 44.70 and 42.72 meters, respectively.
Amherst will be back in action next Saturday at the UMass Invitational.
