Lord Jeffs Drop Two Games, Fall to 3-5

FORT MYERS, FL – The Amherst College softball team suffered a 7-5 loss to Scranton and a 2-0 setback to SUNY Brockport Thursday morning in the 2010 Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. After getting off to a 2-0 start, the Lord Jeffs have dropped five of their past six to fall to 3-5 on the season. Amherst will wrap up its trip to Fort Myers Friday with games against Curry and Fitchburg State.
First-years Theresa Kelley (Los Angeles, CA) and Christina Anderson (Port St. Lucie, FL) pitched the first game for Amherst, with Kelley picking up the loss after allowing seven runs in 4.2 innings. Kelley surrendered only six hits but walked three batters, also striking out a pair. Anderson allowed three hits and picked up one strikeout in 2.1 innings of relief.
First-year Megan Kepnach (Piscataway, NJ) put the Jeffs on the board with a three-run homer in the second inning to make it a 4-3 game, but Scranton (4-6) would add another three runs in the fifth inning. Amherst scored twice in the bottom of the seventh but could not complete the comeback. First-year Reilly Horan (Darien, CT) and sophomore Annemarie Iker (Mill Valley, CA) each went 2-for-4.
Amherst managed only two hits in the second game, with junior Jill Masi (Stamford, CT) singling in the third inning and sophomore Carly Dudzik (Darien, CT) doubling in the fourth. The Jeffs’ only other base runner was senior tri-captain Jackie Tyler (Ridgewood, NJ), who led off the game by reaching on an error. Amherst struck out 10 times in the loss.
Senior tri-captain Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA) picked up the loss against Brockport (9-1) despite allowing only two runs, both of which were earned. Brockport scored once in the bottom of the second inning and added an insurance run in the sixth. Chang-Graham surrendered only five hits with no walks or strikeouts.
