Jeffs Wrap up Florida Trip with Pair of Convincing Wins
Christina Anderson '13 went 5-for-7 at the plate and was 1-0 on the mound on Friday.
FORT MYERS, FL – The Amherst College softball team wrapped up its annual Spring Break trip with a pair of wins in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. After cruising to a 14-0 win over Curry College, the Lord Jeffs took care of Fitchburg State in come-from-behind fashion, earning a 10-2 victory in six innings.
Amherst (5-5) piled on 15 hits in the first game and got a solid pitching performance from senior tri-captain Alex Chang-Graham (San Carlos, CA). The Lord Jeffs scored twice in the first inning, three times in the fifth and twice in the sixth before erupting for seven runs in the seventh. Chang-Graham struck out six and allowed only three hits to earn the complete-game shutout victory.
The Lord Jeff first-years carried the offensive load in the win over Curry, with Reilly Horan (Darien, CT), Christina Anderson (Port St. Lucie, FL) and Megan Kepnach (Piscataway, NJ) each picking up three hits. Horan was 3-for-4, Anderson was a perfect 3-for-3, and Kepnach drove in five runs in a 3-for-5 performance.
Amherst added 11 hits in the second game but did not take the lead until the fifth inning. The Jeffs got one run in the fourth inning to make it a 2-1 game in favor of the Falcons, but an eight-run fifth broke the game wide open. Amherst would add another run in the sixth inning to end the game via the eight-run mercy rule.
In addition to going 2-for-4 in the second game, Anderson earned the win by allowing two runs on two hits and two walks, also striking out 10 Falcons. Horan went 3-for-3 with a triple, while senior tri-captain Emily Neill (Kentfield, CA) and junior Jill Masi (Stamford, CT) each had a three-run triple.
The Lord Jeffs will return to action Tuesday, Mar. 23, when they host Springfield College at 4 p.m.
