AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College softball player Idalia Friedson ’15 will represent her country and her faith on the diamond this July as the outfielder was recently selected to play with Team USA at the 19th World Maccabiah Games in Israel.
Friedson will join an elite group of Jewish athletes at the event, the third largest international sporting competition in the world with over 7,000 participants representing more than 60 countries taking part. With teammates from both Division I and III programs, she will seek to help the USA defend its gold medal from the 2009 games.
A native of Trumbull, Conn., Friedson started 39 of 42 games as a first-year in 2012. The left fielder was a key run producer in the Amherst lineup all spring, ranking third on the squad with a .526 slugging percentage and 29 RBI while batting .310 and tying for the team lead with four home runs.
In the process, Friedson helped Amherst complete the 10th-best single-season improvement in NCAA Division III history as the Lord Jeffs finished 36-6 just a year after going 14-16. Thanks in large part to Friedson’s standout rookie class, Amherst started the year 22-0, reaching its first NESCAC playoffs since 2006 and its first NCAA tournament since 1999 while earning its first NFCA national ranking since 2000.
Joining Friedson on the USA roster will be 14 other Jewish athletes, including eight who are either current or former players at Division I programs. Also representing the NESCAC on the American squad will be Alexandra Sarkowsky ’15 of Wesleyan.
Amherst softball begins its 2013 season at the NTC Games in Clermont, Fla. March 17-23.
