Jeffs Sweep Doubleheader in 2014 Season Opener

Ayers.jpgCLERMONT, Fla. – The Amherst College softball team opened its 2014 season with a double-header sweep of Bethany, 7-5, and Fontbonne, 5-2, in the first day of its spring break trip in Clermont, Fla.

In the first game of the twinbill, the Jeffs (2-0) recorded eight hits to edge Bethany, dropping the Bison to 1-2 on the season. Starting pitcher Arielle Doering ’14 went 4.5 innings and gave up five hits while striking out three. She allowed four runs. First-year pitcher Jackie Buechler surrendered two hits in 2.5 innings of relief work.

Offenisvely, Donna Leet ’15 led the squad with two hits and went 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI. Alyssa Sherwill ’15 recorded a RBI triple and scored twice while Alena Marovitz ’17 and Annie Apffel ’17 went 1-for-3 and 1-for-4, respectively, with a RBI each. Kaitlin Silkowitz ’14, Kelsey Ayers ’15 and Nicolette Miranda ’16 all added a hit for the Jeffs.

Amherst followed up with a 5-2 win in the second game of the day over Fontbonne (5-4). Buechler was excellent in her first career start. The California native tossed a complete game with six strikeouts and allowed just four hits and two runs.

Ayers led the team with three hits and a RBI in four plate appearances. Leet drove in two runs and went 2-for-3. Sherwill and Marovitz both added another RBI on the day and went 1-for-3 and 1-for-4, respectively. Brianna Cook ’16 also contributed offensively and finished 1-for-3.

The Jeffs return to action tomorrow, Mar. 17 and head to Winter Garden, Fla. for a double-header against the University of Southern Maine and the University of Wisconsin-River Falls beginning at 9 a.m.
