Jeffs Edge Southern Maine in Extra Innings, 12-9

Ayers.jpgWINTER GARDEN, Fla. – A pair of first-years helped lead the Amherst College softball team to a 12-9 win in 10 innings over the University of Southern Maine Monday in Winter Garden, Fla.

Amherst has now won three straight to open the 2014 season while the Jeffs handed Southern Maine its fifth consecutive loss. Following a win in its doubleheader against Framingham State, the Huskies finished the day with a 1-6 record on the year.

Jackie Buechler ’17 pitched over seven innings of relief work in a winning effort. The first-year from California surrendered four hits and struck out eight, allowing just one run. Alena Marovitz ’17 drove in two runs in the 10th to secure the win for Amherst.
Offensively, Kelsey Ayers ’15 had a huge day, going 4-for-6 with a RBI to lead all Jeff batters. Kaitlin Silkowitz ’14 and Donna Leet ’15 both contributed three hits. Silkowitz was 3-for-7 and Leet finished 3-for-6 with two RBI. Rounding out the top offensive performances for Amherst was Sarah McKay ’16 with a 2-for-5 performance and two RBI.

The Jeffs return to the field tomorrow, Mar. 18 for a doubleheader against Allegheny at 9 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. contest versus Fredonia State.
