Kurt Bennett '11 Named NESCAC Co-Player of the Week

AMHERST, MA – Amherst College’s Kurt Bennett ’11 has been named the NESCAC Men’s Basketball Co-Player of the Week, the conference announced today. Bennett helped lead the Lord Jeffs to a pair of non-conference victories last week as a dominating presence in the paint.

Bennett stole the show during a 98-76 win over Emmanuel College by scoring a career-high 24 points on 12-of-12 shooting in only 25 minutes of action. After scoring only four points in the opening half, Bennett erupted for 20 points and five rebounds to help the Jeffs build on their one-point halftime lead. Bennett scored Amherst’s first eight points—and 12 of its first 14—in the second half, as the Jeffs used a 23-5 run to take control against the Saints.

In a 94-70 win at Lasell College on Saturday, Bennett added seven points and nine boards in only 16 minutes. The 6’7 center shot 83 percent (15-of-18) for the week to help Amherst—ranked 17th in the latest Top 25 Poll—improve to 6-1 on the season.

Through the first seven games of the 2009-10 season, Bennett leads Amherst in rebounding (5.1 rpg) and is fifth in scoring (7.3 ppg). As a regular in the starting lineup, he has shot nearly 60 percent from the floor as part of Amherst’s impressive young core of big men.

Sharing Player of the Week honors with Bennett is Mick Distasio ’13 of Trinity College. After scoring eight points in a win over Springfield, Distasio broke out with 29 points thanks to an 8-of-12 performance from beyond the arc during a setback to Skidmore College.

Bennett and the Lord Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Jan. 2 for a 3 p.m. meeting with Stevenson University in Maryland.
