Men's Basketball Pulls Away in Second Half for 80-62 Win at Conn. College

NEW LONDON, CT -The top-ranked Amherst College men's basketball team improved to 20-2 overall, and 7-0 in the NESCAC with an impressive 80-62 win at Conn. College this evening. The Jeffs used a 23-4 run at the start of the second half to pull away from the Camels, and remain unbeaten in conference play. 

Fletcher Walters (Ann Arbor, MI) poured in a game-high 23 points to power the Jeffs to victory at Luce Fieldhouse.

Walters was 9-for-14 from the field and 5-for-10 from beyond the arc as the visitors extended their winning streak to 13 consecutive games. Brian Baskauskas (Palo Alto, CA) and Brandon Jones (Hopatcong, NJ) chipped in with 14 points apiece for Amherst.

Connecticut College senior Charles Stone tallied a team-high 12 points to go with nine rebounds and five assists. Stone ranks fourth on the Camel all-time scoring list with 1,329 points and has corralled 684 rebounds in his career. Billy Karis was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, finishing with 11 points for Connecticut College.

Shavar Bernier added 10 points for the hosts, who will host Trinity College Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Stone was 6-for-7 in the opening half, keeping the hosts in contention with some solid interior post play. Each side shot a 56 percent clip in the first stanza and the Lord Jeffs carried a 40-32 lead into the break. The visitors pulled away with a 14-0 run over the opening 3:43 of the second half. Walters buried two of his five triples during the spurt and the Lord Jeffs had built a 54-32 advantage.

Amherst led by as many as 27 in the second half and was able to hold on for the comfortable 80-62 triumph. The Lord Jeffs will visit Wesleyan for a 2 p.m. game Saturday afternoon.
