Olson Named NESCAC Player of the Year; Walters Grabs First Team Nod

Olson
Andrew Olson was unanimously chosen as this year's NESCAC Player of the Year.

AMHERST, MA – The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) has named two members of the Amherst College squad to its 2007-08 Men’s Basketball All-Conference Team. Seniors Andrew Olson (San Diego, CA) and Fletcher Walters (Ann Arbor, MI) were each named to the First Team, with Olson also grabbing his second consecutive Player of the Year honor in what was a unanimous decision.

Olson has been honored by the NESCAC in each of his four years. He followed up being named Co-Rookie of the Year in 2005 with a Second Team nod in 2006, and in each of the past two seasons has been named NESCAC First Team and Player of the Year.

Olson had a superb senior year, leading the conference in assists (181) and assists per game (6.96 apg). His 716 career assists shatter the previous Amherst record and are good for eighth all-time in Division III. He finished fourth on the team in scoring (11.6 ppg) and reached the 1,000-point mark earlier this season. In addition, Olson is still in the running for the prestigious Bob Cousy Award (best point guard in all of college basketball) and the Jostens Trophy (most outstanding basketball player in Division III).

Walters was a key player on both ends of the floor for Amherst. He led the team in scoring (13.8 ppg), rebounds (7.2 rpg) and steals (1.4 spg), and was second in blocked shots (1.2 bpg). Walters was the Lord Jeffs’ top scorer in eight contests and led the squad in rebounding 14 times. He also recorded seven double-doubles.

The NESCAC named Walters Player of the Week twice during the 2007-08 campaign (Jan. 12 and Feb. 4). He was dominant in Amherst’s 87-80 win over Williams on Jan. 12, finishing with 17 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high six assists, and poured in a career-high 26 points with nine rebounds in a win over Bowdoin.

The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, Mar. 8 when they will host either John Jay or Moravian in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in LeFrak Gymnasium.
