SPRINGFIELD, MA - The top-ranked Amherst College men's basketball team remained unbeaten with a 96-49 win over Westfield State College in the opening game of the 2007 Pioneer Valley Classic this evening. Senior Kevin Hopkins (Greenfield Center, NY) led all scorers with 18 points in the game played at host Springfield College.
The defending national Division III champions raced to a 12-3 lead right out of the gates, and would later extend that to 43-22 on a long three-pointer by senior guard Andrew Olson (San Diego, CA) at the buzzer to close the half.
Amherst then proceeded to score the first 11 points in the second half to lead 54-22 on a lay-up by just 2:43 into that half, leaving no doubt as to the outcome. The Lord Jeffs would extend the lead to as many as 48 points (96-48) with 34 seconds remaining on a lay-up by first-year forward Billy Butler (Brooklyn, NY).
Amherst was led by Hopkins, who scored 18 points in just 18 minutes of play. Hopkins was 8-of-9 from the field. Olson followed with 15 points and seven assists in just 22 minutes of action. Junior forward Brian Baskauskas (Palo Alto, CA) also finished in double figures with 13. A total of 16 players actually saw time – and all 16 scored.
For the Owls, no one scored in double figures. The leader was sophomore forward Drew Pereira (Seekonk, MA) with eight points.
With the win, Amherst improved to 4-0, while Westfield State fell to 2-3. In tomorrow’s action, Amherst plays WNEC at 1 p.m., while Springfield hosts Westfield State at 3 p.m. once again in Blake Arena.
