No. 8 Jeffs Close Holiday Classic with 74-52 Win Over Pomona

PASADENA, CA - The 8th-ranked Amherst College men's basketball team closed out the Cal-Tech Holiday Classic with a 74-52 win over Pomona Pitzer College this evening. Amherst improves to 9-0 on the year, while Pomona drops to 2-8.

The Lord Jeffs started the game an amazing 6-for-6 from beyond the arc in just the first ten minutes of play, jumping out to a 30-11 lead. Amherst maintained their advantage into halftime, and took a 47-26 lead into the locker room. At the break, the Jeffs were shooting an eye-popping 68.8% (11-for-16) from three-point land.

In the second half, Amherst's hot hand cooled a bit, as the Jeffs saw their lead shrink to 14 points at 50-36. Amherst responded with a trio of threes from Steven Wheeler (Bloomington, MN), Glenn Wong (Leverett, MA) and Jeff Holmes (Saunderstown, RI) to stretch their lead back to 21 points.

For the second straight game, senior co-captain Brian Baskauskas (Palo Alto, CA) led the team in scoring with 20 points and nine rebounds.  Sophomore point guard Conor Meehan (Meriden, CT) finished with 13 points and six assists on 5-of-10 shooting, while Wheeler and Wong combined for another 23 points, including seven three-pointers.

Justin Sexton paced Pomona with 13 points and six rebounds, while David Liss added 11 points and five boards in the effort.

The Lord Jeffs will return home from their West Coast swing after this evening's game and take a few days to practice before opening Little Three action on Tuesday night with a road game at Wesleyan. Tip-off for that match-up with the Cardinals is set for 7:30 p.m.
