Amherst Men's Basketball Tops Springfield 84-57 in PVC Opener

WESTFIELD, MA – Four players scored in double figures in Amherst College’s potent and balanced attack as the nationally-ranked Lord Jeffs rolled to an 84-57 victory over Springfield College in opening-night action of the Eighth Annual Pioneer Valley Men’s Hoop Classic.

Amherst, ranked 10th in the latest poll, upped its perfect record to 5-0, while Springfield dropped to 4-2.

Springfield held a 19-18 lead midway through the first half, then Amherst outscored them 28-10 to take a commanding 46-29 halftime lead.

Amherst was 13-for-25 from 3-point range, including eight long-range bombs in the first half. Six Lord Jeffs scored from beyond the arc.

Steve Wheeler (Bloomington, MA) led the Lord Jeffs with 16 points. Also scoring in double figures for the winners were first-year Taylor Barisse (Allendale, NJ) with 15 point, and seniors Marcus Bradley (Latham, NY) and Brian Baskauskas (Palo Alto, CA) with 11 points apiece.

Pat Crean had 16 points and six rebounds for Springfield, which shot 3 for 12 from 3-ponit range Ryan Blackmon scored 14 points and Matt Calivieri had 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Amherst will face the host Westfield State College Owls tomorrow at 8 p.m.
