Player of the Week for 2010-11.
AMHERST, MA – Amherst College senior co-captain Conor Meehan (Meriden, CT) was named the first New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week for the 2010-11 season today. Meehan was named the Most Valuable Player this weekend for leading the Lord Jeffs to a 10th Ken Wright ’52 Memorial Invitational title in as many years, and shares this week's conference award with Trinity's Luke MacDougall.
Meehan and the Lord Jeffs outlasted an upset bid from Maine-Farmington in overtime on Friday night, earning a 90-89 result on a free throw with just .4 seconds remaining in the extra session. In Saturday’s Championship Game, Amherst routed Castleton State 56-34 to earn the title.
In the thriller against Maine-Farmington, Meehan scored a career-high 28 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the floor, and an 11-of-14 performance from the free throw line. Meehan pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Lord Jeffs, including six caroms on the offensive end. With four assists and two steals, Meehan had one of his finest all-around games as a Lord Jeff. In the championship game, Meehan scored 13 points with six rebounds, a block and a steal to solidify his spot as the tournament MVP.
This weekend’s MVP selection at the Ken Wright ’52 was the second straight for Meehan, who also earned the top individual honor at the two-day tournament last year on a day that saw head coach David Hixon win the 600th game of his career.
Meehan and the Lord Jeffs will return to action tomorrow night at 5:30 p.m. against Western New England College. The game will feature live statistics, and is the opening leg of a doubleheader with the top-ranked Amherst women’s team, which will play Mt. Holyoke at 7:30 p.m.
