AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College basketball teams will travel to take on archrival Williams College this Wednesday in a pair of non-conference showdowns with the Ephs.
Wednesday’s games will be offered throughout Berkshire County on Time Warner Cable local access channels. Live statistics and free webcasts will also be available for both games. (See below for more information.)
The women’s game will feature the top-ranked Lord Jeffs (17-0, 5-0 NESCAC) and the 21st-ranked Ephs (16-2, 3-2). Amherst has won each of the past eight in the series and is attempting to build on its 36-game overall winning streak. In 2008 the Jeffs headed to Williamstown with a 17-0 record, but the Ephs pulled off the 64-59 upset.
The Lord Jeff women have seen more success against Williams on the road than they have in Amherst, having won their past three games in Chandler Gym by an average of 21.7 points. These teams last met in the 2011 conference semifinals, when Amherst led by as many as 28 points in the second half and withstood a late 25-5 Williams run.
The Williams men are 4-1 against Amherst in the past two seasons, but this year’s meeting between the seventh-ranked Jeffs (15-2, 5-0 NESCAC) and 13th-ranked Ephs (15-3, 3-2) is shaping up to be another classic. Four of the past five have been decided by six points or fewer, as the teams were separated by only one point with three minutes to go in each of last year’s two meetings in Williamstown.
Amherst will be looking to avenge the 77-71 loss that ended its 2010-11 season, as the Ephs defended their home court and advanced to the national semifinals. The Jeffs will need to find a solution for James Wang ’12, who averaged 25.0 points per game in last year’s three matchups. The Ephs, meanwhile, will look to slow down David Waller ’12, who recorded 16 points and five assists in the 2011 quarterfinals and is coming off the best two-game stretch of his career.
