Kaasila Named NESCAC Player of the Week

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. - Peter Kaasila ’13 has been named the NESCAC men’s basketball Player of the Week after helping the Lord Jeffs capture their second consecutive conference title with wins over Tufts and archrival Williams.

Spearheading a second half surge which saw the Jeffs turn a three-point halftime deficit into a 80-64 victory over the Jumbos, Kaasila netted 18 of his game-high 20 points in the second stanza.  Erupting for 26 points on 11-for-13 shooting in the regular season matchup with Tufts, the senior center knocked down 10-of-12 attempts on Saturday, while grabbing eight rebounds. With Amherst down 40-38 with just over 17 minutes to play, Kaasila netted six straight points, giving the Jeffs a lead they would not relinquish.

The tri-captain continued his strong play on Championship Sunday, netting 14 points on 7-for-11 shooting with eight rebounds in a 74-73 victory over archrival Williams. With a layup at the 15:20 mark of the second half, Kaasila also became just the 27th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau (1,002).

Averaging 17 points and 8.0 rebounds during the weekend, Kaasila shot a remarkable 73.9 percent from the floor, connecting on 17 of his 23 field goal attempts. Enjoying a banner year, Kaasila currently ranks second in the NESCAC in field-goal percentage (64.1), while posting career-high averages in points (13.7) and rebounds (6.3) per game.
