Shannon Finucane '12 Named NESCAC Player of the Week
After totaling four points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals during a 77-43 win over Bates College in Saturday’s semifinal round, Finucane erupted for a game-high 21 points during Sunday’s 69-54 win over Colby in the title game. Finucane nearly put in a perfect shooting performance against the Mules, going 8-for-8 from the line and 5-for-6 from the floor, including a 3-for-3 performance from long range.
Finucane averages 9.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.3 assists per game as part of a well-balanced Amherst lineup. In addition to shooting nearly 40 percent from the floor, she is a remarkable 56-for-62 from the foul line this season (.903). Each of her eight free throws in the conference title game came in the final 5:36 of regulation to help the Jeffs fend off a Colby comeback, with her final six being knocked down in the last 1:32.
Finucane’s impressive weekend helped Amherst win its second NESCAC title in the past three years, securing the Lord Jeffs an automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Amherst will serve as one of 16 first- and second-round hosts, and will begin its national title run by taking on Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Friday at 6 p.m.
